American Epics on the Silver Screen: The Searchers

The Milwaukee Art Museum’s summer film series, “American Epics on the Silver Screen,” highlights a few of the classic cinematic works that inspired Thomas Hart Benton’s pieces in the feature exhibition American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood.

Perhaps saving the most praised film for last, the series concludes with the 1956 Western The Searchers, directed by the renowned John Ford and starring John Wayne. Considered by some film historians to be the best Western ever made, the storyline follows a Civil War veteran as he journeys to save his niece from an Indian tribe.
