In conjunction with the 400th anniversary of Russia’s Romanov dynasty, the Friends of Villa Terrace are pleased to present an exclusive exhibition of Imperial Russian porcelain from the private collection of Raymond F. Piper. One of the largest private collections in the U.S., it includes Easter eggs, plates, cups, saucers, vases and figurines from the period of 1825-1917, when the last Romanov czar, Nicholas II, was forced to abdicate his throne during the Russian revolution.

The porcelain Easter eggs are a special part of this spring exhibition because it was customary in Russia to exchange eggs during Easter ceremonies as symbols of Christ’s resurrection as well as the revitalization of new life in nature. Miniature paintings of flowers, birds, religious themes, Russian ornaments and royal cyphers appear on these eggs in a wide array of artistic styles.

An opening reception will be held Friday, March 1 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. featuring Russian Music by the Duo Seranto - Irina Yanovskaya and Mikhail Litvin and Russian delicacies.  In conjunction with the exhibiton, a lecture on the collection at the State Hermatiage Museum in Russia, by Art Historican Joanne  Charlton will be held on Wednesday, March 20. Check our website for times.
