About Phil Hands
Phil Hands is the editorial cartoonist for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, Wisconsin.
Hands began drawing cartoons for the State Journal as an intern in 2004 and became a regular freelancer in 2005. He joined the staff of the State Journal in 2013 and is currently the only cartoonist on the staff of a newspaper in Wisconsin. His cartoons have appeared in USA Today, Newsweek, Time, and The Washington Post. His cartoons are syndicated nationally by Tribune Content Agency. A fierce political moderate, Phil’s cartoons attack the extremists on both the left and the right. He learned long ago that no political party has a monopoly on bad ideas. Phil has won a number of state and national awards for editorial cartooning and was the 2012 recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial cartooning.
